I had something happen to me while I was out fishing yesterday.
I have a best friend, Ross, who I've known since I was eighteen. He loves to fish, almost as much as I do.
He even has the balls to think he's better at it than me.
When he comes over to fish with me at my lake "most of the time" he will catch more fish than me.
Not bigger fish...
But more fish.
He gets real excited no matter what size of a fish he catches.

I don't like to waste my time with the little ones because they are much easier to catch. They are more aggressive and plentiful.
The thrill is not the same for me!

I want the challenge of catching what most fishermen, like Ross, don't get to experience very often in their lifetime.

After a while, has me down six fish to three. He tells Albert "see, I told you, I whip his ass all the time".
Meanwhile, I've been telling Ross, 'it only takes one big one to surpass all your efforts".
It's like in a real bass tournament where they go by total weight, not by how many little ones you catch.
It's quality over volume.
Plus, each one has to qualify to be a keeper or else you have to throw them back. Just like women who don't meet your high standards.
As usual, I'm telling him all I need is just "one big one" and I'll surpass all your dinks.
No matter how many little fish he catches and then bust my balls, I keep my belief that I'm about to catch the monster fish that I feel I deserve.
No matter what you're doing in your life, you must always keep your faith that "you'll get what you believe you will". You'd be amazed at how often this comes true.

Well by the end of the outing, just before dark, it's time to call it a day.

It's not over until it's over, I remind myself.

I make a final cast just beyond some lily pads and start to reel back in....slowly...methodically...focused.
All of a sudden my line takes off like a bat out of hell.
I lower the rod tip, reel in the slack in the line and set the hook hard.
Bam... I got her... the fight is on.
Now, Ross and Albert have this wide eyed look on their faces, as they instantly realize...I've got a keeper on the end of my rod.
They're thinking to themselves..."This son of a bitch has done it again"!
After a few minutes of careful reeling and maneuvering around the lily pads as to not let her get entangled and break away, I lift the monster fish into the boat.
Both of them are wide eyed with excitement.
Like a couple of envious little boys.
Get the scale and weigh her they shout. Let's see how much this bad girl weighs.
I say five pounds. Ross says, "B.S. weigh her anyway".
I put the hook of my electronic scale into her mouth and the total weight is...5lbs and 4ounces.
When you catch as many big ones as I have, you instinctively know pretty much, what you have on the other end of the line.
It comes from years of experience.
